Sports photography usually involves capturing athletes and sports people in motion, such as footballers running with a ball, tennis player hitting a tennis ball or a racing car. To capture these you will firstly need a zoom or telephoto lens if you’re in the crowd, because they’re often quite far away from your seat. A lens with image stabilisation is a good idea to further your chances of capturing a sharp photo. To capture them in motion you will need a camera that can go to high ISO settings in order to use faster shutter speeds. You don’t always have to capture a sharp image though, and capturing a bit of blur can create a good effect and show they are moving fast.
You will need to plan ahead before the event to find out where you will be positioned on the day, so it’s a good idea to check it out beforehand and try and position yourself in a place where your view won’t be blocked, where you won’t cause too much nuisance to other people, and that will have a good backdrop to your pictures. Showing the audience in your background or other sports people can change the whole mood of the photo, and help the viewer understand the context of the photograph.
Wide apertures e.g. low F numbers are a good choice for sports photography, to further increase the shutter speed and to blur the background. The shutter speed you should be looking for should be a higher number than your focal length, for example with a focal length of 300mm you should be looking for a shutter speed of at least 300mm, but you may need even more depending on how fast your subject is moving.
