Taking black and white pictures of transport doesn’t always involve taking pictures of moving vehicles, you can photograph old abandoned vehicles such as vintage cars, or shipwrecks you may find on a beach. To capture fast moving vehicles such as a train you should be looking at a zoom lens, because the train will likely be moving fast in the distance or may be stopped at a station, so this will be useful for either situation. To capture the vehicle in motion you will need a fast shutter speed, and so a high ISO should be used and a lens with image stabilization to reduce blurring, also moving the camera with the vehicle can help reduce blur even further. Although this isn’t always the desired effect, you can try adding some blur to the photo by using a slightly slower shutter speed to emphasize the vehicles movement. If you’re capturing vehicles that aren’t moving, a portrait lens or even a wide angle lens will work well if you want the vehicle to appear bigger than it is, and give an interesting effect.
If you’re taking your images at night, it’s best not to use a flash because this can often look unnatural, the best choice would be to photograph subjects that have their own lights on at night, such as a ferry or train will have their own lights when it’s dark. For an interesting photo idea you could try standing next to a busy road at night and use a tripod to capture a long exposure of the car headlights, which will give you an interesting arty photo effect.
